LifeSongs for Orphans Ukraine

I first discovered LifeSong for Orphans in 2016. A group from Birmingham needed someone be in charge of crafts at a summer camp for orphans in Ukraine. First I had to find Ukraine on a map. Then I had to check my passport. Then I remembered what my daddy said was my middle name “GO!”  Then of course, I said yes and discovered the beautiful country and people of Ukraine. Two years later (2019) they called me again, and this time I was happy to take my daughter Becca along to help. In 2021*  when Covid was winding down, they called again, and this time I was fortunate to take my friend from Cullman, Joey Orr. Every trip was full of learning, loving and caring for the people at this summer camp for Orphans. For more detailed information, log on to Lifesong.org and looking for ministry in Ukraine. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE 2023 CALENDAR WILL GO TO THE LIFESONGS UKRAINE MINISTRY.

*A sticker placed on some of the calendars said that my last trip to Ukraine was in 2022. That year should have been 2021!

Here are some pictures from all three years:

Be Still Version 2

Be Still Final

Several years ago when I first started painting, I painted many of my favorite verses for scripture art cards. Now that I am a little more experienced, I’m going back to my favorite verses and doing them again. Look! Here’s the first version and the new version!

Working on a new picture…

Added another layer of color…

Added leaves and a new font style…first the outline with a 005 Micron Pen and then two colors of watercolor

Painting furniture with wood stain

Painting with wood stain! Here’s a new way to add art to furniture! I am using Mini Wax colored stain to make these designs. First I sanded the top of the chest. Then I started with two colors of brown.
I painted the stain full strength with a paint brush, waited a minute and then wiped it off.
Next I painted some petals on the sunflower and then went back and put another layer on the center to make it darker.
I designed as I painted and decided on three sunflowers of different sizes.
I really like the no color design, but I decided to try adding the color stains. After doing a petal or two in yellow, I decided I liked the way the wood grain showed through the color and decided to add more. The wood grain inspired a field in the background.
When my husband saw the addition of the green field, he pointed to the knot above the field and said, “Look! A volcano!”  And a volcano was added. I added some pale blue for a hint of a sky. When I noticed another small dark knot above the volcano, I decided to add the dragon fly!
After adding more layers of stain in places that needed depth, I wrote the hidden scripture verses around the center of the largest sunflower. Here is the finished chest in its place of honor in the train room in our younger preschool area. Sitting by his handcrafted chest is the master woodworker who is also one of our preschool dads,  Jonathan Bartlett. He took the chest back to his shop and added several layers of polyurethane to protect the finish. I love the way the wood grain ended up inspiring the design. Our God is the great creator. We are made in His image and gifted with the desire and ability to create! GLORY!

Bella, Ragdoll Kitty—our new child!

Now that all the kids are gone, our house is really quiet. Our new “baby,” Bella Pearl, is bringing so much joy that she is like having a new child! She deserves a whole category on this blog because she is so wonderful and fun!

This is one of her favorite spots. She like to sit at the counter and watch me cook and wash dishes.

She is called a Ragdoll type of Persian. If you look closely at this picture, you can see that she is twisted from the middle with her front legs turned one way and her back legs turned another! It’s like her backbone is twisted. She can be positioned into many shapes and she loves it.

She loves to play.  She has a tiny mouse that she likes to carry around. She’s learning how to play fetch. Soon I will post a video!

Here’s how she loves to sleep when she’s really relaxed…oh, the life of a cat—naps everyday!
