Our Owl Couple—The Watercolor Process

“More Love to Thee” Piano Solo

About three years ago I discovered owls in the woods behind our house. We had heard them many times but never seen them before. After a while I started to find their special sleeping places. During the winter months there is a pair that stays behind our house. I have read that these types of barred owls mate for life and can live as long as 25 years! In the daytime they usually sleep in the same area and sometimes hang out together for several hours. I’ve seen them together several times but usually they are in a protected place with vines all around so it’s difficult to get any pictures. But there was one day when the sun was just right, and they were high up in the tree posing for me. I was so excited to get this picture and knew that it would have to become a watercolor painting.

During the summer we went on a cruise to Spain and Portugal. At night I would go to listen to the live music on the ship and paint. We had several days at sea where I could paint all day. As I painted I thought of the verse on the painting “Be devoted to one another in love.” I thank God for the love He has given us in our 35 year marriage. God is love!
